Every day, American women and girls are besieged by images and messages that suggest their beauty is inadequate—inflicting immeasurable harm upon their confidence and sense of wellbeing. In Beautiful You, author Rosie Molinary—in no uncertain terms—encourages women, whatever their size, shape, and color, to work toward feeling wonderful about themselves despite today’s media-saturated culture.
Drawing on self-awareness, creativity, and mind-body connections, Beautiful You incorporates practical techniques into a 365-day action plan that empowers women to regain a healthy self-image, shore up self-confidence, reframe and break undermining habits of self-criticism, and champion their own emotional and physical wellbeing. Through accessible, doable daily actions, women and girls are encouraged to manifest a healthy outlook on life—teaching them to live large, and starting them on the path to learning to love themselves and others. Molinary steers clear of the florid affirmations and daily meditations often utilized by books geared toward personal growth, and instead delivers a hip, modern guide of inspirational thought that keeps pace with the times.
I had the privilege of taking a college course (several years ago) that was taught by Rosie Molinary, the author of this deeply self-satisfying guide to self-acceptance. The class was on body image and perhaps one of the classes that to this day, I still think about. We touched on topics of body image and how we can accept how we look without turning to drastic and sometimes costly measures. One particular day, we were asked to come to class without any makeup or hair product. Easy for some, not so much for others. It was a challenge for me because I am one who always straightens my hair and always has at least a little makeup on going out the door to look “presentable”. I remember leaving class that day for a new appreciation for my natural beauty and a little more confidence.
Fast forward a few years, and I’ve still kept in touch with Rosie. When she contacted me and told me about the 2nd edition release of Beautiful You, I jumped at the opportunity to read it. In doing so, I found myself sitting back in her class & learning so many things about myself that I’ve failed to truly appreciate & I slowly started to gain back the confidence that I had lost having experiences pregnancy and the not so fun ways ones body changes after childbirth.
Whether you’re in high school, college, or several (or more) years out of college, Beautiful You, is a book I highly recommend you get your hands on. It is meant to be read throughout the span of the year, with taking just a few minutes each day to read a page or two. And as you read, my hope is that you will find yourself looking in the mirror with a new love and appreciation for your unique and beautiful you qualities.
