whatithought[blog]I immediately became a fan of Kristy Woodson Harvey’s writing the moment I read her first novel, Dear Carolina. The writing, the characters, the story, they all felt like home to me and instantly made me a lifelong fan of anything KWH writes.

Dear Carolina was a book that I recommended to many fellow book lovers shortly after reading it and one that I still recommend to anyone who loves a good southern fiction book. The same goes for this book. (Note: One does not have to read Dear Carolina before Lies and Other Acts of Love, however, I recommend that you read both books.)

Lies and Other Acts of Love is a wonderful story about family, the lies we tell, and the ability to love and thrive despite those lies. The story is told from two POV; Annabelle, who married her husband Ben after only knowing him a few days, and Lovey, Annabelle’s grandmother, who in her 80s, is having to navigate life with a sick husband all while reflecting on the choices she made to get where she is today. Lies and Other Acts of Love has a distinct charm to it and the characters, each with their individual stories, knit together a story so beautifully raw and endearing it’s nearly impossible to put the book down.

Lovey and Dan met when they were in grade school, but after spending years apart, they are brought together again and determined to spend their lives together, but their families and the war try to keep them apart. Once they finally marry, five daughters soon follow and a blissful life that is one of the books. Now, with Dan being confined to a wheelchair and hardly in the right state of mind, Lovey reflects on her life and tries to overcome the struggles of growing older. unspecified

Annabelle was engaged to Holden, the ideal man in the eyes of her mother and Lovey. However, when Annabelle calls off the engagement, meets a musician named Ben and comes home married to him after only a few days, her family can’t help but wonder, what went wrong? Annabelle is madly in love, though and after spending a year on the road with Ben, comes back to get settled into her new life with her new family. She struggles with the pressure to make friends and to get pregnant. Her struggles lead her to finding herself in an unexpected way all while uncovering secrets and lies.

Despite the lies that are uncovered and the secrets being told, Lies and Other Acts of Love is filled with southern humor and charm and a very distinct sense of togetherness and family. I couldn’t get enough of this story and the little bumps along the way. It’s beautifully written and told in a voice that any true southerner is sure to soak up.

With warmer weather among us, I encourage you to put on your Sunday best, grab yourself a cool glass of lemonade and a copy of this book, have a seat outdoors and get lost in the pages of Lies and Other Acts of Love.

4.5 out of 5 stars.
