They say young love doesn't last, but a girl from the wrong side of the tracks with unique abilities and the hometown golden boy were determined to defy the odds. For Zack Covington, Anna-Grace—his "Gracie"—was the one. But one night forever altered the course of their future; when a devastated Gracie disappeared without a trace, Zack was left to agonize over what happened to the girl he loved. As the years passed, his desperate efforts to find her uncovered nothing.
Now working for Devereaux Security, he stumbles across a painting featuring a special place only he and Gracie would know. The image is too perfectly rendered for it to be coincidence. His Gracie must be alive. When he comes face to face with her, he is shocked—and heartbroken—to discover the wounded shell of the girl he once knew and still loves. Her psychic gifts are gone, and worse, she believes he betrayed her all those years ago.
Zack has enemies, and once his weakness is discovered, Gracie becomes a target for revenge. He'll have to save her before he can earn her trust and her love. And he vows they'll never be torn apart again.
I received a physical copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
If you haven’t heard of the Slow Burn series by Maya Banks yet, now is the time to check it out and get it on your radar. I finished reading the second book in the series not long before I started the third and I can honestly say that reading them back to back did not leave me disappointed.
I was nervous, at first, to see how this book would hold up to the previous book, In His Keeping, but fortunately, Safe at Last, did not disappoint. I was curious if we would get to know Zack Covington more since he had a bigger presence in the second book and luckily, that’s exactly what we got in Safe at Last. Zack’s story is one that broke my heart into a million pieces before slowing building and putting it back together again. Even though I love the Deveraux brothers, getting to know one of their closest comrades expanded the circle a little more and showed me just how much the family circle expands within the DSS business.
**Before I continue, I must let you know that this book deals with difficult circumstances including rape. Please do not take the events of this story lightly.**
Falling love at sixteen can be tricky, especially when the love of your life is four years older. When Anna-Grace finds herself being forced by three of Zack’s best friends, she believes her love and trust has been completely torn to shreds. Gracie, as Zack so affectionately calls her, will never be able to trust another man again and finds herself living in fear and completely shattered.
It’s been twelve years and Zack can’t stop loving Gracie and wondering what happened to her. When fate seems to be on his side, he meets Gracie again when he least expects it. But seeing her again isn’t the happy reunion he always dreamed of. When Gracie sees Zack, the look on her face is one of utter fear and terror. Zack’s heart is broken, but he won’t give up. He must find out what it is he did to make Gracie so afraid of him, but when he does find out, he isn’t prepared for the onslaught of emotions.
To call this book an emotional rollercoaster would be an understatement. From the very beginning I knew Zack was innocent and his feelings towards Gracie were genuine and true. I was heartbroken to see the torture that Gracie experienced and then once again experiences, on a whole new level. But to see the boundaries Zack was willing to cross in order to find answers and bring anyone who hurt Gracie to justice just blew me away. I love their love story and even though it took some time for them to get to their happy ending, the way in wish they got to it proved so much the strength they both possess.
Safe at Last was a book I struggled to put down, not only because of all that took place, but because I just had to know the outcome of Zack and Gracie. Their story is one that was earth shattering, but one that also proved just how powerful love can be for two people who have faced so much over a period of time.
Four out of five stars
