A New Feature | Beauty & a Book

Introducing. . . .

beauty and a book1-2

Here’s how it works: Pick either your favorite book, a book you’re currently reading, or any book really & write about what makes the main character beautiful. The best part is…this doesn’t have to be about physical beauty! Tell us about the characteristics this character possesses that makes them beautiful. Inner beauty is such a hot topic right now, especially for young females [males too!] & I want to show others that beauty comes in forms. We see it on magazine covers, on the big screen, and other various forms of media outlets, but we can also find it in the books that we read.

Throughout the month of May & perhaps into June, several other bloggers will be sharing their own Beauty & a Book post. If you would like to join, please feel free to email me at hsheffdeld2011 at gmail dot com. I’d be thrilled to have you share your own B&aB post!

A few weeks ago, I got the idea to start a new feature on the blog. A feature that focuses on the inner beauty of the characters we’ve grown to love so much & not just their outer beauty.  I find this topic to be so important, especially in this day and age, when beauty can be defined so many ways. As a teacher, I see so many young girls, even in my second grade classroom, who are so worried about how they look & whether or not they’re pretty enough. This breaks my heart and I make sure to let all of my students, boy or girl, know that they are beautiful or they are handsome.

Beauty should not be defined by the color of our skin, the color of our hair, or even the color of our eyes. Beauty is being strong, compassionate, helpful. Beauty is honesty, intelligence, bravery.

Beauty is limitless.

We are all beautiful. It’s what’s on the outside and how we treat those around us that matter most.

The book & character I’d like to focus on is America from Kiera Cass’ The Selection Series.

America is such a fantastic character. She’s brave, she’s determined, and she’s strong. Yes, she’s very beautiful, but that’s not what makes her an incredibly likable character. I think what makes her so likable is the fact that she isn’t easily wooed by the Prince. Coming from where she does, life isn’t as easy as it is for others, but she doesn’t let the attention or the palace life take away from who she really is. She overcomes a lot & allows for her experiences inside the palace strengthen her and help her to truly listen to her heart.

America is beautiful.

What makes her beautiful?

Her strength | determination | poise | compassion | her heart.

America is the kind of girl that I admire & that I would love for any child of mine, boy or girl, to aspire to be. America is a character who overcomes diversity. Overcomes trials & tribulations. And through it all she remains true to herself. She remains beautiful.

Who are some book characters that you find beautiful? What’s beautiful about them?

I hope today & everyday, you’re able to find something beautiful about yourself.

Hi! I was wondering if you were still doing this feature? I tried to email, but I got a message back saying that it couldn’t be delivered because it didn’t exist. And I would love to participate if you are still doing this, but if not, no worries. I just wanted to ask. 🙂
