Dare I say it? Imagine a world without books. I know, I know. Blasphemy!
But really, try to imagine it. What do you think the world would be like?
In this day and age, technology already consumes us day in and day out. We have our phones, laptops, tablets, etc. There’s always some new and advanced form of technology developed each and every day! So a world without books could quite possibly happen in the future. And for my sake, I hope that day doesn’t happen until I am long gone.
Sure, we can talk like digital print books still exist after the make-believe extinction of physical books. But what if….what if….books, digital or physical, were no more.
The bibliophile in me is screaming internally at the thought! The thought in which makes me squirm in my seat, want to cry, curl up into the fetal position, and hug my massive book collection close to my chest and never, ever, ever, let go.
My first thought, other than complete and utter sadness at the thought, is that the imagination would be no more. Would people have dreams & aspirations that are inspired by reading? Would we be able to imagine worlds beyond ours that are filled with inspirational characters? Would we be able to pause and take a moment to delve into another life? No, in a world without books, I don’t think we’d be able to.
The world is already moving at a fast pace and many forget to stop and take a moment to just enjoy the now. For me, reading is taking that break from reality and living the life of another, even if it’s just for a chapter or so. I think the world would move a lot faster than it already is and it would be a lot more stressful than it already is.
Sheesh…just thinking about it makes me a little more stressed.
So for me, no imagination and the inability to pause would be the top two things I think the world would be like without books.
How about you? What do you think the world would be like without books? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
