In the tradition of New Adult superstar Jessica Sorensen, Ellie Cahill’s debut novel is a charming friends-with-benefits story . . . with a twist!
What if after every bad breakup, there was someone to help “cleanse your palate”—someone who wouldn’t judge you, who was great in bed, someone you were sure not to fall in love with? “Sorbet sex” could solve everything—as long as it never got too sweet.
Joss and Matt have been friends since freshman year of college, meeting one night after Joss is dumped by her boyfriend. After a few drinks, Matt humors her with a proposition: that he’ll become her go-to guy whenever she needs to heal a broken heart. In return, she’ll do the same for him. The #1 Rule: They’ll never fall in love with each other. People scoff at the arrangement. But six years later, Joss and Matt are still the best of friends . . . with benefits.
Through a string of boyfriends and girlfriends—some almost perfect, some downright wrong—Joss and Matt are always there for each other when the going gets tough. No strings. No attachments. Piece of cake. No problem. After all, since they wrote the rules, surely they can play by them. Or can they?

I’ve been wanting to read Liz Czukas’s young-adult novel, Ask Again Later, but when given the chance to read her new-adult novel (under the name Ellie Cahill) I jumped at the opportunity. For the past year or so, I’ve been engrossed with new adult books. Perhaps it’s because I am in my early-mid twenties, but I just love the wording & stories that new adult novels possess. As soon as I started WHEN JOSS MET MATT, I fell in love. I was hooked & I loved the way in which this story was told. Before I continue, let it be known that as soon as this book hits store shelves, I will be purchasing it because I will most certainly be rereading it.
WHEN JOSS MET MATT is new adult fiction at its finest! Oh my gosh, I can’t express just how much I love the characters, the story line, and basically everything this book contains. It’s perfect! We first meet Joss and Matt during their early years of college. When Joss’s relationship with her high school boyfriend goes wrong, she finds herself relying more on her new friend, Matt. Joss and Matt develop a relationship that soon leads to them agreeing to what is called “sorbet sex” (see above definition & rules list). I loved this list that they came up with. And yes, like most new adult books, this is filled with lots of sex. Sorbet sex that is, but it didn’t ruin the book. It added humor, but wasn’t awkward or embarrassing to read. All of those scenes, were just right in my opinion.
The book continues to follow Joss and Matt well past their college years. And I loved the journey it took us on with these two. It goes to show that relationships don’t just happen or fall into our lap at the most perfect and opportune time, but sometimes, we have to make a few wrong turns in order to realize what is right for us. Joss, especially, went through this. As did Matt. Each in their own way.
One of my most favorite aspects of this book would have to be the flashback/flash forward moments. They allowed for me to get to know the characters both then and now. I love books like this, especially when those moments are done right & really allow the ready to see the growth of the characters. (Well done, Ellie Cahill!) It takes a wonderful author to be able to pull these scenes off and have them flow effortlessly with the story/plot.
The overall feel of this book was perfection! I loved everything about it and wish I were friends with both Joss and Matt! I love them, individually and together. The book was a perfect mix of funny, serious, and sexy. And the ending?! Oh my goodness…LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! I can’t say it enough, I hope you give this book a try & find yourself falling in love with it just as fast as I did! Liz…errr, I mean Ellie, I hope to read more new adult from you. Very well done!
Five (BIG) stars.
