See what I mean?!
Hot girls get the fairy tales. No one cares about the stepsisters’ story. Those girls don’t get a sweet little ending; they get a lifetime of longing
Imogen Keegen has never had a happily ever after–in fact, she doesn’t think they are possible. Ever since her mother’s death seven years ago, Imogen has pulled herself in and out of therapy, struggled with an “emotionally disturbed” special ed. label, and loathed her perma-plus-sized status.
When Imogen’s new stepsister, the evil and gorgeous Ella Cinder, moves in down the hall, Imogen begins losing grip on the pieces she’s been trying to hold together. The only things that gave her solace–the theatre, cheese fries, and her best friend, Grant–aren’t enough to save her from her pain this time.
While Imogen is enjoying her moment in the spotlight after the high school musical, the journal pages containing her darkest thoughts get put on display. Now, Imogen must resign herself to be crushed under the ever-increasing weight of her pain, or finally accept the starring role in her own life story.
And maybe even find herself a happily ever after.
DAMSEL DISTRESSED also has a companion soundtrack, Imogen Unlocked, that is performed by the author’s band…Wedding Day Rain! How cool is that?
I had the opportunity to interview author Kelsey Macke & here is what she had to say about her upcoming debut, music, & more!
Where did your inspiration for DAMSEL DISTRESSED come from?
DAMSEL DISTRESSED was inspired by so many things. Some of it came from my own experiences as a teenager, and other moments were inspired by my friends. Still other facets of the story and characters were shaped by my experiences as a teacher in high school and middle school. There are little whispers of so many lives on the pages of my book and I hope that everyone who reads it finds a little sliver of their own experience in the words.
I see that music is also a big part of your life. How did music inspire/play into the writing process of DAMSEL DISTRESSED?
My husband Daron and I are a band, Wedding Day Rain, and we write all of our songs together. When it was decided that we were going to write and record a soundtrack for Damsel Distressed, the two pieces of artwork became inextricably linked. The songs developed and influenced the editing of the novel, and the novel inspired certain moments–and even phrases– used in the songs.
In our minds, the album, Imogen Unlocked, is a continuation of the story. It deepens the experience and helps the reader more completely immerse themselves into Imogen’s heart and mind.
Which is harder….writing a song or writing a novel?
They’re so completely different. Writing a novel is, in the early stages, about just letting the words flow. They might be rotten, or crazy, or not quite right. You just have to get the words on the page and not stand in your own way by thinking too much.
Writing a song requires greater specificity from the get-go. You have just a FRACTION of the total words in a song as compared to a 80,000 word novel. You have to choose every single word perfectly and decisively.
Describe DAMSEL DISTRESSED in five words.
Raw, sassy, swoony, hopeful, dramatic
With this being your debut novel, what words of wisdom do you have for those aspiring authors out there?
Keep writing! It gets said a lot, but pre-publication time is CRAZY-MAKING and distracting yourself with new work is a great way to stay sane.
