May 7th, 2014, just one day after her 50th birthday, my aunt passed away after a long battle with cancer. For me, this was my first experience losing a close family member. It hit me hard too, like it would for everyone else, but for me…I lost some of the sunshine in my life.
As I type this, I can’t help but remember her laugh, smile, and overall passion for life. My aunt was one of the happiest people I knew and found a reason to smile regardless of the situation. She loved music and being on the lake and sunsets. Especially sunsets. In fact, right before she passed, she asked to see the sunset and as soon as the sun dipped below the water, she passed.
My aunt was an educator and one of the contributing factors to why I spent 5 years chasing a degree in elementary education. Three days after she died, I graduated from college with that degree and I did it with her smiling down on me. It was a bittersweet moment and one that I will never forget. I hadn’t planned on decorating my graduation cap, but it was my way of having her there with me as I walked across that stage. After all, she’s been there for me through all the other major events in my life; my high school graduation and my wedding.
To me, she was even there for my college graduation. She just had a better vantage point than everyone else there cheering me on.
It’s been a month since she died and it still hasn’t hit me in the way I keep expecting. It’s hard. I don’t think there is any other way to describe it and I keep thinking that there is something more I could do.
That’s when I realized that I could help someone else who is fighting cancer.
I could use my voice, my blog, my passion for reading to help others.
So, where do you come in?
As fellow bloggers and readers, I need your help. I am wanting to start a fundraiser that involves reading to raise money.
I’ve contacted Stand Up to Cancer, the organization that I would like to benefit from this,
but I need your support…your ideas.
How can you help?
I need bloggers who are willing to help spread the word, contribute, and help me make this successful.
Authors and/or publishers who are interested in donating books or swag to be auctioned off
I also need your ideas!
If you’d like to help or would like to contact me for any reason, you can reach me on Twitter
or via email

I really want this to be a success and not for my benefit. This is something I am passionate about and wanting to put 100% into, but I can’t do it alone. In my short time as a blogger, I’ve learned that the blogging community and the reading community in general is one that sticks together.
I’d like to use the hashtag #BooksForACause to help spread the word.
I’ve also gone ahead and created the fundraising page for Books for a Cause. You can access it HERE.
Please join me in standing up 2 cancer!
And if there is anything you feel you can do to help, please feel free to contact me.
